3 Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Seattle’s Eastside

This January 28th, we welcome in the Year of the Rooster. The new year, also known as the Spring Festival, is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar and therefore the dates change from year to year. Each Chinese New Year is characterized by one of twelve animals which correspond with the Chinese zodiacs. Those born during the year of the rooster are characterized to have observant, hardworking, courageous, talented, and confident personalities.

Here on the eastside of Seattle, we have many amazing events to celebrate the Year of the Rooster. Below are a few of my top picks!

 

Bellevue Collection’s Lunar New Year

The Bellevue collection, alongside the Seattle Chinese Culture and Arts Association, Overseas Community Affairs Council – Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Taiwan Benevolent Association of America will welcome in the 2017 Lunar New Year with a cultural celebration held on February 4th, 2017 between 11am and 6pm at the Bellevue Square in Center Court.

Resonance at Soma Towers Presents First Friday Salons

Resonance welcomes the Year of the Rooster! Mae Lin, of the Seattle Symphony performs the popular “Butterfly Lovers” Violin Concerto, an acclaimed piece based on an eastern story about star-crossed lovers and inspired by Chinese folk music. Our classical programming director, Julia Tai, sings Chinese songs of home and nature, reminiscing scenes from the East. This event will take place on January 6th, 2017 from 8pm to 10pm.

Uwajimaya’s New Year Lion Dance

Uwajimaya will ring in the Luna New Year celebration with a lion dance to bring good luck and happiness in the coming year.
