What is Eco-Architecture?

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, we thought we'd dive into one way mankind has combined two things that don't often go hand in hand: construction and helping the planet. It's called eco-architecture, and many are certain that it is the future.

What is Eco-Architecture?

We live in an age where sustainability is the focus of most industries, and an increasing number of people are aware of the damages humankind has made on the planet and its environment. This has caused architecture to adapt to include eco-friendly materials and technology.

Eco Architecture refers to designing buildings with strong green and environmental elements to them. It can also refer to the process of refurbishing an already existing building by taking an old structure and minimizing the environmental impact of the final design. Where this is the case, architects focus on re-using building materials and creating something new from something old.Eco Architecture refers to designing buildings with strong green and environmental elements to them. What is the Goal of Eco-Architecture?

The goal of eco-architecture is to have as little impact on the environment as possible. Many developers destroy habitats without thinking twice in order to build commercial or housing structures. Eco-architects work to build their projects around habitats, minimizing the effects on wildlife and nature. Where existing buildings have already damaged habitats, eco-architects work to replace certain elements of these buildings with nature in mind, such as grass roofs or clever lighting techniques that make the most of natural light. Sustainable materials, including recycled and second-hand products, are often used alongside traditional materials such as steel and plastic. Eco-architecture also incorporates materials such as salvaged timber, restored tiles and windows.

It’s Not “One Size Fits All”

When people hear the term eco-architecture, they often associate it with camping or minimalist living, but the reality is that many of these environmentally super-charged spaces actually feature lavish, luxury living. With that being said, those looking to indulge in eco-architecture can rest assured that the word "eco" no longer has to mean giving up their modern amenities and familiar comforts.
